This poster/gallery session will present an award winning AP Computer Science distance-delivered independent study course developed by the Independent Study High School in cooperation with the J.D. Edwards Honors Program at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. This online course is designed for students who already have a basic understanding and working knowledge of computers the first semester content of the AP Computer Science curriculum. Students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades are participating in the school's Tiger Steps walking program which prmotes physical fitness. Students keep track of how far they walk each day before school and report each Friday and convert the distance to miles. A humdrum health unit was resuscitated when Wheeler Elementary fifth graders used iMovie to communicate their knowledge of first aid topics. Students practiced research skills, storyboard creation, collaboration, and visual literacy in conjunction with their new iMovie and digital photography skills. The excitement generated by the iMovies turned an ordinary unit about insect bites and nose bleeds into something extraordinary. Holiday A Educator
