We feel that is is incredibly important to offer resources that exist outside of our spring conference dates and this is one of them! We talked to Julie Hahn from Beadle Middle school, and\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandy Delzell from\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norris Elementary School, past grant winners, to share their experiences on how they used their mini-grants.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here&#8217;s Julie&#8217;s Story<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6334 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/netasite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_2567-1-Julie-Hahn-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/netasite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_2567-1-Julie-Hahn-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/netasite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_2567-1-Julie-Hahn-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/netasite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_2567-1-Julie-Hahn.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Why did you apply for a Virtual Field Trip Mini Grant?<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">I applied for the Virtual Field Trip Mini Grant\u00a0because I was seeking additional funding for High Ability Learner (HAL) experience\u00a0for my students.\u00a0 With budgets always tight in school systems, I was very thankful to have received this grant and provided the Operation Montserrat\u00a0experience for my students!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>What did you use your Grant Money for?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I used the grant money to provide an e-mission experience titled Operation Montserrat for my students.\u00a0 This is a short description:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0e-Mission: Operation Montserrat is based on a real historical event. The volcano on the normally tranquil island of Montserrat has come to life. As flaming pebbles and lava begin their devastation, emergency response student teams learn a hurricane is approaching. Using real-time hurricane and seismic data, teams of student specialists assist Mission Control in saving the residents from certain destruction.\u00a0 Students are guided through this experience by a scientist that we skype from the the Challenger Learning Center in West Virginia.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><strong>What was your favorite part of your grant funded project?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The favorite part of my grant funded project is seeing the excitement in my students as they work through the mission and &#8220;save&#8221; the residents on the island of Montserrat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Why should others apply for a Mini Grant?<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Other teachers should apply for a Mini Grant because the grant can provide additional experiences for students that would not normally be funded by our schools.\u00a0 I also think teachers should apply because the application was relatively simple to fill out with a quick response as to the grant being awarded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Here&#8217;s Sandy Delzell&#8217;s experience.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6335 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/netasite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/KG-DL-Sandy-Delzell-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/netasite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/KG-DL-Sandy-Delzell-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/netasite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/KG-DL-Sandy-Delzell-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/netasite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/KG-DL-Sandy-Delzell-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/netasite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/KG-DL-Sandy-Delzell-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Why did you apply for a Virtual Field Trip Mini Grant?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">I applied for this grant money to help my school defray the cost of the online field classes that we do with the Omaha Zoo.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>What did you use your Grant Money for?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Our Kindergarten department\u00a0visits with the Omaha Zoo four times during the school year.\u00a0Our students learn about owls and bats, elephants, penguins, and sharks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>What was your favorite part of your grant funded project?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">I love that our school can take all 200 students to the Omaha Zoo to learn about the different animals.\u00a0Peter is an amazing teacher who can keep our young students focused and entertained for 30 minutes.\u00a0They learn so much from him!!\u00a0 Since these experiences are online, we do not have to travel and lose classroom time to educate our students.\u00a0This is an amazing experience for our students and we are fortunate that it is a service that is provided to us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Why should others apply for a Mini Grant?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Applying for a mini grant will allow a teacher, school, or district to provide educational opportunities that they may not be able to afford otherwise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We are so grateful for these educators who go above and beyond to make the classroom experience a meaningful and exciting one.
