It\u2019s new every day.\u00a0 It is very engaging.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t take a huge amount of time, and when you\u2019re done, you\u2019re done.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t immediately offer another puzzle in an attempt to pull you down into an ad-infested, time-monopolizing black hole. You have no alternative except to wait until tomorrow to take a try at the next one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you haven\u2019t played it before, Wordle is an online property that was acquired by the New York Times from software engineer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Josh_Wardle\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Josh Wardle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 You have 6 tries to guess the day\u2019s five-letter word (everyone gets the same one).\u00a0 After each guess, you receive\u00a0 feedback:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your guess isn\u2019t in their big List-O-Words, it \u201cshakes\u201d to let you know it is not a valid option.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0If a letter in your guess is <\/span><b>in the word of the day but in the wrong spot, it turns yellow<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0If a letter is <\/span><b>in the word and is in the right place, it turns green<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a letter<\/span><b> isn\u2019t in the word at all, it is shown as gray<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s it. The challenge is to come up with the day\u2019s word before you run out of your six allotted guesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What prompted me to write this piece was the realization that just a short time after successfully completing the puzzle on any given day, I usually have absolutely <\/span><b>no<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> idea what the solution word was.\u00a0 For the life of me I just can\u2019t remember.\u00a0 This is interesting to me, but does it have any significance?\u00a0 Let\u2019s think about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To successfully arrive at a solution, one needs to perform some fairly significant strategic thinking.\u00a0 Wordle is basically a self-contained hypothesis\/feedback loop. It temporarily locks our brains into the task of rapidly generating possible letter combinations based on the specific set of information available at each point in time. The skills that we develop through practice on tasks like this (hypothesizing and responding to feedback) are ones that we can hold on to and re-apply in many other situations\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As best I can theorize, our brains (generally) are only engaged with <\/span><b>the word<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> itself for that <\/span><b>brief<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> moment when we either experience triumph or suffer the ignominy of a shattered Wordle \u201cstreak\u201d.\u00a0 This brief moment of closure gives us no real reason to dwell upon the target word at any significant length.\u00a0 This leaves this memory (if we ever had it at all) susceptible to rapid degradation and loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what <\/span><b>can<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we learn from Wordle?\u00a0 The thinking processes behind activities like this need to be practiced frequently by students in a variety of settings and applications.\u00a0 These have \u201clegs\u201d that can carry students far into the future.\u00a0 Memories, on the other hand, are hard work to build in the first place and even more difficult to maintain over extended periods of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d love to hear what you think about these thoughts and conclusions.
